Real-time monitoring of deformations during sheet piling work

Jordal-Amfi

For the safe construction of the New Jordal Amphitheatre, Cautus Geo was hired to monitor possible deformations on a stormwater culvert for Hovinbekken. It runs right through the facility.

Problem statement

Sheet piling work directly above and close to an old culvert was considered critical in the development. The danger was that large volumes of water could go astray. Measurement data before and during the construction work was therefore important.

Solution

Cautus Geo installed a SAAF500 from Measurand in the culvert prior to the piling work. The sensor is 18 metres long. It measures deformations very accurately. Data was collected in advance of the work and made available to the client in Cautus Web. On the basis of this data, limit values for warning were established. A notification plan was established for damage to the culvert, and Cautus Geo established an office in the field. This ensured the shortest possible reaction time if the limit value for deformation was exceeded.

The instrumentation ensured that the work could be carried out efficiently and with confidence in the potential consequences of the sheet piling work. There was no evidence of deformation as a result of sheet piling in the critical zone.

About the Measurand SAAF sensor

SAAF500 is a continuous cable consisting of 500 mm long measuring segments. The segments contain MEMS sensors that measure angle changes between the segments with high accuracy. The SAAF system is robust. It can be used for horizontal and vertical deformation measurements. Accuracy for a 32 metre long sensor is approximately 1.5 mm. SAAF measures the temperature along the entire cable. The information can be used in deformation calculations to achieve the best possible measurement results and minimise the impact of temperature changes.

Cautus Geo is the distributor for Measurand in Norway and Sweden.
