Monitoring for safe work
Cautus Geo monitors threatening boulders and secures the safety work on Sognefjellsveien in Lom.
Problem statement
Innlandet County Council wants to secure the stretch of road between Røysheim and Repp in Lom with safety fences. During a rock clearance on the upper side of the road, before the work began, a section of rock in the shape of a large boulder was uncovered, which could be unstable and thus jeopardise the securing work along the road.
Solution
Cautus Geo established automatic and continuous monitoring with a total station of the potentially unstable rock section. Data is continuously sent to Cautus Web. From there, alerts and alarms are sent out if movements are detected in the rock section.
The Sognefjellsvegen road between Røysheim and Repp in Lom has occasionally been closed. In September 2022, rocks fell and spread over a few dozen metres of the road. In the autumn of 2025, work began to protect road users with rock protection and a safety fence. The work will be completed in spring 2026.
A large and threatening boulder above the exposed road section has been placed on continuous monitoring. The boulder will be monitored throughout the construction period and into the summer.
The Sognefjellsvegen road is particularly important for residents of Bøverdalen. They have no way of getting round if the road is closed. During the safety work, it has been partially closed. This may be the case quite often until the work is completed, which may require light regulation and narrowing of the carriageway.
Movements in the monitored rock section are notified and alarmed at millimetre level.
