Cautus Geo established automatic and continuous emergency monitoring to safeguard work at the landslide site on the Meråker railway when it was closed after a landslide.

Problem statement

In November 2025, a landslide occurred on the Meråker railway in Meådalen in Stjørdal. A large boulder took soil and trees with it. Stone masses were left on the railway track, which was damaged. Fear of new landslides prevented clean-up and repairs.

Solution

Cautus Geo established automatic and continuous monitoring with alarms in the landslide area. This ensured safe working conditions for cleaning and remediation.

The landslide occurred on a Friday. The following Monday, Cautus Geo was on site with equipment for automatic and continuous monitoring. The emergency response ensured that cleaning and repair work could get underway quickly.

The landslide over the Meråker railway in Meådalen occurred close to the border with Meråker. Passing trains were stopped at a good distance from the landslide. No one was injured.

Passengers on the Meråker Line, which since 1881 has linked Trondheim with the Swedish ski resort of Åre, Østersund and the Swedish railway network, had to be transported by bus. The railway was closed for an extended period.

The system set up by Cautus Geo was calibrated with alarm limits. The work at and on the railway was to be risk-free. Any movement in the unstable landslide area would trigger an alarm directly to Bane NOR and the contractor on site.
