Cautus Geo is monitoring pore pressure and water quality in the centre of Nordfjord. There will be a new walkway from the cruise port to Olden town centre.

Problem statement

Cruise passengers arriving at Nordfjord Port in Olden need a safe walkway into the city centre. The county road runs alongside the fjord. The solution is to create an embankment in the sea to establish the walkway. The ground is unstable and backfilling can cause undesirable particle dispersion in the sea.

Solution

Cautus Geo installed sensors at various depths under the seabed. They automatically and continuously measure the pore pressure. Two environmental buoys outside the backfill area monitor particle dispersion. Collected data is analysed in real time in Cautus Web. An alarm is triggered if something happens in the ground or in the sea.

The Port of Nordfjord welcomes over 100 large cruise ships with more than 360,000 passengers during the summer season. Many tourists want to experience Birkedalsbreen and Fjærlandsbreen. Others want to do some shopping on land or go into Olden town centre. This calls for a safe and secure walkway. It is being built on rock fill along the county road.

Cautus Geo installed 12 pore pressure gauges at various depths below the seabed. Measuring buoys were established in the fjord. They monitor the water quality. This provides automatic and continuous monitoring with real-time analysis in Cautus Web with alert limits for alarms if undesirable things occur in the ground or in the sea.

25,000 cubic metres of rock mass are needed to establish the walkway. A longitudinal bridge will be used for parts of the route. In addition, two new 200-tonne and one 100-tonne mooring brackets for large cruise ships will be installed during the construction period.

The developer is Nordfjord Harbour. It is an inter-municipal port that includes the harbour in Måløy. It is the country's fourth largest fishing harbour, but also a cruise port in Olden.

The Port of Nordfjord has a major investment programme of over NOK 900 million up to 2036. Over the next few years, more than NOK 250 million will be spent on a new pedestrian walkway, as well as expansion and upgrades, including charging power at the quayside facility at Olden. The new walkway will provide tourists with a safe route parallel to the county road into the city centre.

Continuous and automatic monitoring provides peace of mind. If something happens, we're alerted and can stop work and assess measures.
