Problem statement

The ground conditions inside Oslo Central Station are demanding. A new construction pit and concrete tunnel were established in summer 2021 for the new Follo Line. There was a need to ensure the stability of the construction pit and established train tracks in the area.

Solution

Sensors, inclinometers on sheet piles, total stations, temperature gauges and nodes automatically and continuously monitored and sent data to the Cautus Web access solution where the actual condition could be read in real time. The system was set up with automatic alerts if limit values were exceeded. The track monitoring continued until the new Follo Line was put into operation.

The aim was to ensure that stability was monitored even after the construction work had been completed.

Cautus Geo has a long track record on the Follo Line project. It started in 2016. Measurements are reported in real time via Cautus Web. The Follo Line is dimensioned for high-speed trains and six tracks will be established at Ski station.

Inside the Oslo Central Station area, ground conditions are demanding. Tracks were re-laid there. In 2021, a new concrete tunnel was built under Middelalderparken. Cautus Geo monitored and ensured that everything was steady and stable. The construction pit and the concrete tunnel were monitored. This ensured monitoring of the stability of the concrete tunnel with new tracks and established tracks in the heavily trafficked area.

Cautus Geo also installed sensors along a stretch of around half a kilometre. Inclinometers were put in place on the sheet piling, a total station for measuring prisms, temperature gauges ensured frost control and nodes monitored the construction, to name a few of the most important aspects of the instrumentation.
