New assignment on the Follo Line

Cautus Geo has established automatic monitoring of the tracks and station building at Ski. The company has been monitoring ground conditions at the Oslo S station entrance since 2016.

The assignment at Ski station is related to the development of the Follo Line. Norway's largest transport project to date. The entire station is being extensively modernised. It will be dimensioned for future high-speed trains that can pass through the station area. There will be a total of six tracks.

The work on the station is extensive. 85 per cent of the Follo Line project is complete. The first part of the station was opened to traffic on 24 August this year. Bane NOR plans to start traffic for the entire station and through the Follo Line's long tunnel from December 2022.

Movement and stability

The instrumentation carried out by Cautus Geo was put in place in early August. It involves monitoring the movement and stability of railway tracks in use inside the station area and the station building during the excavation and establishment of the construction pit in the eastern part of the station area.

The monitoring will continue for one to two years. The Spanish company OHL (Obrascón Huarte Lain SA) is the client. The developer is Bane NOR.

Required ground conditions

- "The ground conditions are demanding in the station area, where the construction pit will be established close to the current tracks and the station building. It's therefore important to have real-time data that gives an alarm if something happens in the ground," says CEO Atle Gerhardsen of Cautus Geo.

Cautus Geo has a long track record on the Follo Line project. In 2016, Cautus Geo established automatic monitoring on the Oslo Central Station entrance, from Ekebergåsen, through Middelalderparken and in. Measurements are reported in real time via Cautus Web.

Instrumentation on skis

• 2 Measurand SAAX automatic settlement hoses of 40 and 60 metres monitor settlement on railway tracks.
• 13 motion sensors that monitor the basement structure at Ski station.

New Follo Line

• Construction of double track between Ski and Oslo Central Station.
• The journey time is halved from 22 to 11 minutes.
• 22 kilometres long. 64 kilometres of train tracks. Tunnel of 20 kilometres.

New ski station

• The first part of the station has been opened. Everything will be completed in December 2022.
• Part of the Intercity development southeast of Oslo.
• Will have six new tracks and three 350-metre platforms.
• Curved wooden roofs over the platforms, which are up to 9.5 metres high.
• Stairs, ramps and glass lifts up to the platforms.
• Parking (bike and car), kiss & ride and taxi rank.
